Our United Way is one of the largest in the nation. We invest in more than 200 programs in 13 counties through the Community Impact Fund and participate with caring community partners to address challenges facing families and individuals. Inspired by local residents in 1905, United Way continues to mobilize our community to make lasting improvements on important human care issues.
Nearly 100 years young, Metro Atlanta’s Red Cross is hard at work in our diverse community of 5 million people – every day – bringing help and hope to neighbors in need. With the same passion and commitment of our volunteer founders, we’re empowering a new generation to prevent, prepare for and cope with emergencies that devastate homes, threaten lives and separate loved ones.
Since 1890, The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Area Command has had long-term experience in understanding the barriers that prevent economically-disadvantaged populations from meeting their basic needs. Many of the people we serve are on fixed incomes, earning minimum wage, supporting multiple family members on a single wage or simply not working at all. In particular, we serve people primarily living in poverty.
Hosea Feed The Hungry is open all year long providing quality human services every week. All of our services are provided completely free of charge to over 50,000 families and individuals a year. Hosea Feed The Hungry and Homeless was founded in 1971 by civil rights icons Rev. Hosea and Juanita T. Williams and follows the principle that education and self-help must fortify charity work so recipients learn to break the cycle of poverty.
Emergency Assistance; Food, Clothing, Emergency Shelter, and Homelessness Prevention are available to assist qualifying individuals with securing needed services through our Family Advocates. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides assistance to households who are financially challenged by the high cost of winter heating bills. Eligible families receive a one-time payment that is applied to their heating bill.
Atlanta Legal Aid is a non-profit law firm that low income, the elderly and disabled can turn to for free legal aid. The firm wants to ensure that everyone has full access to justice and legal support. The Atlanta Legal Aid Society has represented Atlanta's poor in civil legal cases since 1924. Our work helps our clients deal with some of life's most basic needs, protection against fraud and personal safety. We can also provide foreclosure help, eviction prevention, and even help with utility disconnections.
